Texas Rent Receipt Template

A rent receipt is the written record that rent was paid, how much, and for which period. Good receipts protect both sides: the tenant can prove payment, and the landlord's records stay consistent if a balance is ever disputed.

What it is

A rent receipt template is a repeatable form for acknowledging each rent payment. It records the amount, date, period covered, payment method and any balance left, so the payment history can be reconstructed from paper alone.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always give a rent receipt?
Give one for every payment as a matter of routine, and always for cash. This page does not assert a single statewide receipt form — the habit matters more than the format, and your lease may add its own requirements.
What if the tenant pays only part of the rent?
Receipt exactly what was received, show the period it was applied to and the balance remaining, and keep a copy. Do not mark an account 'paid in full' when it is not.
Can a receipt show a late fee?
Only a fee the written lease allows, shown as its own line. Under §92.019 the fee must be in the lease, be reasonable, and rent must have been unpaid at least two full days after the due date.
How long should I keep receipts?
Keep them with the lease file for the tenancy and afterwards. Receipts are the proof behind any later balance claim, deposit accounting or notice.
